1. The first governor of Vermont was elected on November 4, 1791. Thomas Chittenden won by a large margin and served for 14 consecutive years, making him the longest-serving governor in Vermont history.

4. November 4, 1986, was a historic day for Vermont environmentalists. This was the day that Vermont became the first state in the nation to ban billboards on its highways, largely due to the efforts of a grassroots organization called "Scenic Vermont."
5. On November 4, 1835, the abolitionist newspaper, The Emancipator, was first published in Middlebury. The paper was founded by Gamaliel Bailey, who became one of the most influential voices in the anti-slavery movement.
