1. In 1905, the first electrically powered streetcars were introduced to Burlington, Vermont, on October 27. The streetcars were part of the new infrastructure being developed to allow people to easily and comfortably travel throughout the city without the need for their own vehicle.
2. In 1927, the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury was dedicated on October 27. The hospital was home to individuals with mental illnesses and was built to provide a therapeutic and compassionate environment for those in need.
3. In 1938, the Vermont State College System was established on October 27. The system included four schools: Castleton State College, Johnson State College, Lyndon State College, and Vermont Tech. The schools provided higher education opportunities for Vermont residents and those from neighboring states.
4. In 1983, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department introduced a new hunting and fishing computer system on October 27. The system allowed hunters and anglers to purchase licenses and tags online, making the process much more convenient for sportsmen and women across the state.
5. In 2014, the first cannabis decriminalization law in Vermont was enacted on October 27. The law reduced the penalty for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana from a criminal offense to a civil violation, similar to a traffic ticket. This was a step towards full legalization of marijuana, which took place in 2018.
