1. The Illinois State Capitol was dedicated on November 6, 1888. The building, located in Springfield, was designed by Illinois architect Elijah E. Myers.

2. On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln, who was born in Kentucky but spent much of his adult life in Illinois, was known for his leadership during the Civil War.

3. On November 6, 1917, the worst train wreck in Illinois history occurred near Hammond, Indiana. Two trains collided head-on, killing 86 people and injuring 127 others.

4. On November 6, 1984, Chicago Bulls player Michael Jordan made his NBA debut. Jordan, who is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, played for the Bulls for 13 seasons and won six NBA championships.

5. On November 6, 1978, the People's Temple cult massacre occurred in Jonestown, Guyana. The cult was led by Jim Jones, who was born in Indiana but spent much of his adult life in Illinois. Over 900 people, including Indiana Congressman Leo Ryan, died in the mass suicide/murder.
