1. On October 1, 1861, the first Kansas regiment of African American soldiers, known as the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry, was established. They played a vital role in the Civil War and their bravery and dedication paved the way for future African American soldiers.

2. In 1908, the first car was sold in Kansas from an automobile dealership. It was a Buick and was sold for $1,250.

3. On October 1, 1917, Fort Riley in Kansas became the headquarters for the 89th Division during World War I. The division consisted mainly of soldiers from Kansas and Missouri and saw action in France during the war.

4. Kansas became the 34th state to adopt a state flag on October 1, 1927. The flag features the state seal on a blue background and the sunflower, a symbol of Kansas, is prominently displayed.

5. The Wichita Airport, now known as the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, opened on October 1, 1954. The airport has since undergone multiple renovations and expansions and is a hub for both commercial and private aviation.
