1. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Union General William T. Sherman began his 294-mile "March to the Sea" from Atlanta to Savannah, passing through Georgia on October 19th.

2. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris officially ended the Revolutionary War and recognized the United States as a sovereign nation, which included Georgia.

3. In 1946, the University of Georgia Bulldogs played their first football game under coach Wally Butts, defeating the University of Florida Gators 33-14.

4. In 1951, the Georgia Institute of Technology facilities were officially designated as the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, in honor of the philanthropist and former chairman of the Coca-Cola Company.

5. In 1982, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performed its first concert in the newly-built Atlanta Symphony Hall, which is now considered one of the premier concert venues in the world.
