3. On this day in 1962, the Atlanta Braves played their first game at Atlanta Stadium (later renamed Fulton County Stadium). The team had moved to Atlanta from Milwaukee during the off-season, and this game marked their first official home game in the city.

4. In 1976, Jimmy Carter, a native of Georgia, was named the Democratic Party's nominee for the presidency of the United States. Carter went on to win the election that year and serve as president from 1977 to 1981.

5. On October 2, 1996, a heavily-armed man named Mark Barton went on a shooting spree in Atlanta, killing 12 people and injuring 13 others. Barton had also killed his wife and children before going on the rampage, and he ultimately turned the gun on himself as police closed in.
