1. On October 27, 1787, the New Jersey State Legislature became the third state to ratify the United States Constitution, which officially established the federal government under the Constitution.
2. On this day in 1928, the Holland Tunnel, connecting New Jersey to New York City, was officially opened to traffic after five years of construction. It’s named after the Chief Engineer, Clifford Milburn Holland.
3. In 1938, the radio broadcast of Orson Welles’ “War of the Worlds” caused widespread panic in New Jersey and across the country as many listeners believed the fictional story was a real-life news broadcast. The events of the broadcast purported to be happening throughout the cities in New Jersey as well as other parts of the country.
4. On October 27, 1971, the first ever professional soccer game in New Jersey was played at Downing Stadium in East Jersey, Newark, between the New York Cosmos and the Dallas Tornado. It finished in a 1-1 draw.
5. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey, causing widespread damage and power outages throughout the state. The storm caused billions of dollars in damage and was responsible for the death of 34 people in New Jersey. This day is often remembered as a somber day in New Jersey's history.
