1. On September 22, 1864, the Idaho Territory was established by an act of the United States Congress, marking the beginning of Idaho as a distinct political entity separate from the larger Oregon Territory. The new territory included present-day Idaho, Montana, and large portions of Wyoming and Utah.

2. In 1901, the first irrigation project in the state was completed, providing water to an arid region of southern Idaho and allowing for the cultivation of crops such as sugar beets and potatoes. The American Falls Reservoir, which feeds the irrigation system, is still in use today and provides critical water resources for agricultural and industrial purposes.

3. On September 22, 1945, the first public television station in Idaho, KUID-TV, began broadcasting from the campus of the University of Idaho in Moscow. The station remains in operation today as a PBS affiliate and provides educational and cultural programming to viewers throughout the state.

4. In 1955, the Teton Dam, located in eastern Idaho, was completed and began storing water for irrigation and power generation purposes. However, in 1976, the dam failed catastrophically, causing widespread flooding and the loss of numerous lives and homes. The disaster led to new safety regulations and increased oversight of dam construction and maintenance.

5. In 1992, the Idaho State Historical Society opened the Old Idaho Penitentiary Museum in Boise, providing visitors with a glimpse into the lives of inmates and staff at one of the state's most notorious prisons. The museum includes exhibits on life in the prison, famous inmates, and the various methods of punishment and rehabilitation used throughout its history.
