1. In 1780, George Rogers Clark led a successful attack on a British stronghold, Fort Sackville, located in what is now Vincennes, Indiana. Clark's victory paved the way for American control of the region, including parts of present-day Kentucky.
2. In 1862, during the Civil War, Confederate General Braxton Bragg moved his army towards Kentucky in an attempt to gain control of the state. Union General Don Carlos Buell pursued Bragg and the two armies met in what became known as the Battle of Perryville on September 25. The Union Army emerged as the victor, but the battle left more than 7,500 casualties on both sides.
3. On September 25, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson visited Louisville to rally support for the war effort during World War I. He spoke to a crowd of more than 100,000 people at the state fairgrounds and urged Americans to support the war and the troops fighting overseas.

5. On September 25, 1978, the Kentucky State Fair Board announced that Louisville would host the Kentucky Derby for the next five years while renovations were made to Churchill Downs. The Derby had been held at Churchill Downs since its inception in 1875 and the move to Louisville was met with mixed reactions, but the race continued to be a huge draw for fans of horse racing from around the world.
