1. In 1778, American forces led by General George Rogers Clark successfully captured the British-held Fort Sackville in present-day Indiana, a significant victory in the Revolutionary War. Clark, who was from Virginia, played a crucial role in securing Kentucky for the newly-formed United States.

2. The first commercial oil well in the Western Hemisphere was drilled in 1818 near present-day Burkesville, Kentucky. The well produced a small amount of oil, but the discovery helped kick off the American oil industry.

3. The infamous Hatfield and McCoy feud, which began in the late 1800s and lasted for decades, had its roots in Kentucky. The two families lived on opposite sides of the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River, which forms part of the border between Kentucky and West Virginia.

4. Kentucky native Tom Owen became the first person to complete a solo around-the-world flight in 1969. Owen, a former Marine who later became a commercial pilot, completed the flight in a single-engine Piper Aztec over the course of 22 days.

5. In 1995, a devastating tornado outbreak struck several states, including Kentucky, killing 13 people and causing millions of dollars in damages. One of the hardest-hit areas was the town of Brandenburg, where an F4 tornado destroyed dozens of homes and businesses.
