1. On September 28, 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain, which ultimately led to New Mexico becoming a part of Mexico.
2. In 1850, the United States Congress passed the New Mexico Organic Act, which established New Mexico Territory and expanded its borders to include parts of present-day Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah.
3. On September 28, 1862, Confederate troops invaded New Mexico and captured Union forces in the Battle of Albuquerque, which resulted in the Confederates briefly occupying parts of the territory.
4. In 1950, the UNM Lobos football team played their first game in Albuquerque against Western State (now Western Colorado University), winning 47-0. This began a tradition of college football in the state that continues to this day.
5. On September 28, 1983, West Mesa High School in Albuquerque was officially dedicated, becoming the 12th high school in the Albuquerque Public Schools system. The school has since become known for its strong athletic programs and diverse student body.
