1. On September 5, 1835, Wisconsin's territorial government established the first post office in present-day Milwaukee. The post office was named Milwaukee and served as a critical link between Milwaukee and the rest of the world.

2. In 1975, September 5 marked the opening of the Milwaukee Brewers' new $19 million stadium, County Stadium, with a game against the California Angels. County Stadium, which was located in Milwaukee's Franklin neighborhood, was the Brewers' home field until 2000.

3. On September 5, 1917, La Crosse's Frank C. Hixon established the Hixon Forest Nature Center, a 290-acre park that was set aside for public use. 4. In 1932, Osseo's William S. Middleton graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Middleton went on to become a pioneering physician and advocate for public health, serving as the chief of staff of the Veterans Administration and playing a key role in the development of the National Institutes of Health.

5. On September 5, 2004, Madison's Chris Blaney became the first Wisconsin native to win the Ironman Wisconsin triathlon. Blaney completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run in just over nine hours, beating out over 2,000 other competitors.
