Can you tell us about yourself?
"Hello. My name is Britney James. I work at Quitman Upper Elementary, In Quitman Mississippi . I am a fifth grade ELA teacher and I've been here for two years."
Why did you start a career in education?
"I started teaching because it's something I've always aspired to be from. I was a little girl. I enjoyed playing school and things of that nature. It was kind of just like an instinct or intuition."
If you could have any other job what would it be and why?
"If I had any other job it would be event planning simply because I like the glitz and glam of it, the details of it. I'm a detail oriented person."
How are kids different now than 30 years ago?
"It's today from 30 years ago. 30 years ago we were, technology was not a thing for us. We didn't really do video games so we had to go outside and play with what we had to make do versus these are just kind of though that are in the house, in front of the TV or the video games or the tablets or their computers or iPads. That's just what entertains them."
How is teaching different now than 30 years ago?
"Teaching is different now because of the integrational technology within your classroom. A lot of us are going paperless versus, um, when I was in school, we had fowls, textbooks and materials in hand. Not everything's on from books and iPads."
What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?
"Something that I would tell someone that wants to become a teacher and make sure that this is what you want to do. This has to be your passion, not just the job, but it's the career. But you have to truly love what it is that you do."
What is one thing you would change to help kids learn better?
"One thing, um, to help the kids learn better. And I think it's just more hands on approach and trying to integrate on an everyday life skills, but actually help them learn better now. Thank you."
